Champions, Mentors and Ambassadors

How you can support our service leavers and veterans’ transition from the military to rewarding careers in construction

There are many ways to support BuildForce and our service leavers and veterans as they transition into new careers in construction.  Regardless of whether you are ex-military, we welcome your support and advice as our new recruits navigate their way through our industry and their new careers.

The roles are available to anyone with a passion and belief in supporting our Armed Forces:

  • Champion
  • Mentor
  • Ambassador

Please read more about the roles we have available and how you can support.

Champions

The BuildForce champion can be anyone driven by the vision to have a more diverse workplace with the integration of ex-military. Someone who believes in the talents and strengths of our Armed Forces and the unrivalled benefits of their skills in industry.

The champion is a crusader within their own organisation; energised by a passion for our service leavers and veterans. They support us by rolling out the BuildForce programme within their organisation and becoming a key point of contact for ourselves and our ex-military.

There is no limit to the number of BuildForce champions you have in your organisation; they can be per project, sector or region.

A BuildForce champion will support us by:

  • Promoting BuildForce within their organisation.
  • Identify possible opportunities for our ex-military, including site visits; work placements; mock interviews and employment.
  • Provide support during these visits on site.
  • Capture success, areas of improvement and performance of our ex-military once in employment.

Mentors

The BuildForce mentor is an important part of the service leaver and veteran’s personal and professional journey.  Our mentors typically possess military or construction experience.

Our ex-military mentors have transitioned from the British Army,  Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and can provide much needed support and advice. They have “been there and done that” and make the mentees concerns and worries seem normal.  They can show the mentee the route they have already successfully travelled.

Our construction mentors have decades of industry experience. They are enthusiastic about construction and our Armed Forces and enjoy the role they play in helping our ex-military achieve their goals.

Our mentors and mentees are carefully matched according to skillset, seniority and location. The BuildForce mentoring program draws heavily on the giving spirit of the mentors; this in turn inspires our ex-military to stretch themselves beyond what they believed to be possible. We provide mentor training and ongoing support for our mentors.

A BuildForce mentor will support us by:

  • Providing career advice, CV support, mock interviews and networking opportunities
  • Providing a friendly environment for their mentee to share concerns or worries
  • Providing ongoing support as their mentee enters employment
  • Identify inhouse opportunities and support the mentee’s application
  • Further connect within their own network

  • Acting as a senior point of contact for BuildForce
  • Having a social sustainability strategy inclusive of ex-military recruitment; with a role-out of best practise amongst supply chain members
